The Top Ten Richest People In The World
Billionaires are among the most powerful people on the planet, controlling big portions of the world economy and having a major impact on everything from philanthropy and scientific advancement to international politics and the media. They founded businesses that support some of the most well-known brands, including Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla, Google, and Nike, and that have tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of employees worldwide. Most of them are self-made. Others, like Rupert Murdoch and Bernard Arnault, had a slight advantage, but they considerably increased their wealth and went on to build empires in their respective sectors.
A large portion of the wealth of many billionaires is held in the shares of the business they established. The value of that stock fluctuates, and so does their wealth. According to Forbes, Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani was the eighth richest person in the world on March 1, 2023. However, the value of the equities owned by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and French cosmetics heiress Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, who were ranked No. 9 and 10 respectively last month, increased, putting both of their fortunes above Ambani's. On April 1, Mike Bloomberg debuted in the top 10 at No. 7, while Ambani dropped to No. 13. It's a monthly shuffle for some people towards the top of Forbes' Real Time list of billionaires.
Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, was the fifth-richest person in the world as of March 2021 and had a net worth of $97 billion. Since that time, the stock of Facebook (now known as Meta Platforms) has plummeted, and Zuckerberg dropped out of the top ten richest people. Zuckerberg is still in the top 10 despite Meta stock's recovery, which has seen a roughly 70% increase since the beginning of 2023. He is ranked No. 15 as of April 1, 2023, and is valued $75.7 billion, up from $63 billion one month earlier.
In February 2022, Indian businessman Gautam Adani passed Mukesh Ambani to take the title of wealthiest person in Asia. Last year, his wealth increased by $55 billion, making him the third richest person in the world as of late January with a $127 billion net worth. The billionaire and his enterprises angrily refuted the allegations made in a damning study published by short seller Hindenburg Research on January 24 that claimed Adani Group was engaged in a "corporate scam." Since then, shares of listed Adani Group companies have plunged precipitously. On February 1, 2023, Adani left the top 10 richest list. He is ranked No. 26 and is worth $44.3 billion as of April 1. He was ranked No. 32 on March 1 and had a value of around $38 billion.
